The Simpsons, created by cartoonist Matt Groening (and named for the members of his immediate family except for Bart, which is an anagram for Brat), first appeared in 1987.
The Simpsons premiered as a half-hour comedy series January 14, 1990. Acclaimed by critics and fans alike as one of television's truest and most hilarious portraits of the American family, the series received the 1990, 1991, 1995 and 1997 Emmy Awards for Outstanding Animated Program.
The Simpsons, steeped in irreverence, enjoys a far more colorful history and has had a greater impact on the nation than most television series. The show has given us such phrases as "Aye carumba!," "Eat my shorts, man!" and "Don't have a cow, man!," which have become a part of everyday language for countless individuals.
Homer Jay Simpson is a fictional character in the animated television series The Simpsons, and he is voiced by Dan Castellaneta. He has become a popular cartoon character along with the rest of his family and is known especially for his annoyed grunt "D'oh!", which has been included in the Oxford English Dictionary. Homer is named after the father of the show's creator Matt Groening.
Although The Simpsons has a floating timeline in which the characters do not age, and the show is set in the current year, certain dates have been given. Homer was born on May 12, 1956.He was raised on a farm by his parents, Mona and Abraham Simpson. In the mid-1960s, while Homer was between nine and twelve years of age, Mona went into hiding following a run-in with the law. Homer attended Springfield High School and fell in love with Marge Bouvier in 1974.Marge became pregnant with Bart in 1980, while Homer was working at a miniature golf course, turning the crank that spins the windmill (sometimes too quickly).
The two were wed in a small wedding chapel across the state line, from there they spent their wedding reception alone at a truck stop, and the remainder of their wedding night at Marge's parents' house. After failing to get a job at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant, Homer left Marge to find a job by which he could support his family. He briefly worked at a taco restaurant called the Gulp n' Blow, until Marge found him and convinced him to return. As a result, Homer confronted Mr. Burns and secured a job at the Plant.Marge became pregnant with Lisa in 1983, shortly before the new couple bought their first house. In 1985 and 1986, Homer saw brief success as the lead singer and songwriter for the barbershop quartet the Be Sharps, even winning a Grammy. During his time with the group, Homer was frequently absent from home, which put stress on his marriage. After the group broke up due to creative differences, Homer went back to Springfield to continue his old life.Sometime in the late 1980s, Homer and Marge carefully budgeted so Homer could have his dream job as a pin monkey in a bowling alley. Unfortunately for Homer, Marge became pregnant with Maggie shortly after he started his new job, and not being able to support his family, he went back to the Nuclear Plant.

Marjorie "Marge" Simpson (née Bouvier) is a fictional character featured in the animated television series The Simpsons and is voiced by Julie Kavner. She is the well-meaning and extremely patient wife of Homer Simpson. Her most notable physical feature is her blue hair, styled into an improbably high beehive; she is proud to have never met anyone with taller hair outside Graceland. Marge was named after, and loosely based on, Margaret "Marge" Groening, mother of series creator Matt Groening
Marge’s image is typically that of a stereotypical sitcom mother who is sometimes portrayed as naive and gullible. Despite having higher morals then most other characters, Marge has had her fair share of wild escapades throughout the show’s history. She was once a police officer in Springfield, took therapy for road rage, was jailed for shoplifting, became a gambling addict, showed alcoholic tendencies, was an unwilling participant in a cross-country police chase, overdosed on steroids and developed amnesia. These are just some of the strange situations in which Marge has found herself. She also displays a surprisingly strong will. In The Joy of Sect, she escapes brainwashing by the Movementarian Church. Marge is the only member of the family who actively encourages church attendance. She also appears to have significant athletic ability in times of imminent danger. She is bilingual, being fully fluent in French.
Marge is a talented painter. When she was a teenager she had an intense crush on Ringo Starr and painted a large amount of portraits of him. She also wrote to him, but only received a reply 25 years later. His response inspired her to enter an art contest. Her portrait of a drunk Homer asleep on the couch won the competition. She was then hired by Mr. Burns to do a self-portrait. The resulting portrait won even Mr. Burns’ praise, a massive feat in itself.
Marge is a very talented cook. She once started a pretzel business, which flourished with the aid of the mafia. She has entered various cooking challenges, although circumstances such as vengeful competitors and overheated ovens cause her to lose and once, sabotage other competitors. Marge revealed in the episode All's Fair in Oven War that she feeds the family on twelve dollars a week. In general she is regarded as a very good cook. She is especially renowned for her pork chops.
As a teen, Marge had waist length hair that she always wore down, but got the idea to wear it in her trademark beehive for senior prom in the episode, The Way We Was. In the Shary Bobbins episode, her hair is shown close to knee, consistent with the logic that a lot of hair would be needed to create her tall beehive. Marge has confessed that her hair is not really blue but is, in fact, gray. It was revealed by Homer in Secrets of a Successful Marriage that Marge dyes her hair with blue dye #56; "She’s been gray as a mule since she was seventeen." However, it is revealed in the episode Fear of Flying that Marge's blue hair dates back to when she was a small child. Because of her unusually large hairstyle, her height is reported to be 8'6", as noted by Apu in the episode Marge in Chains. In The Simpsons Season Four DVD commentary, Matt Groening states that the original idea behind Marge's hair was to conceal large rabbit ears. The gag was intended to be revealed in the final episode of the series, but was scrapped early on due to inconsistencies.
As with many Simpson characters, Marge's age changes to serve the story. In first-season episodes Life on the Fast Lane and Some Enchanted Evening, Marge is said to be 34, but her age was later changed to 38, possibly because she and Homer attended their twentieth anniversary high-school reunion in one episode. In the episode Regarding Margie, Homer mentions that Marge is his age, meaning she could be anywhere between 36 and 40. In Bart After Dark she claims to have lived in Springfield for 37 years.

Bartholomew "Bart" Jojo Simpson is a fictional character in the animated television series The Simpsons, who is voiced by Nancy Cartwright.[1] He is the oldest child and only son of Homer and Marge Simpson, and is the brother of Lisa and Maggie. According to The Bart Book he was born on April 1, 1980.
As a 10-year old boy, he is a self-proclaimed underachiever who begins each show in detention writing lines on the blackboard. He is easily distracted, even, strangely enough by algebraic equations. His penchant for shocking people (including Springfield's rich citizen Charles Montgomery Burns) began before he was born: Bart "mooned" Dr. Hibbert while he performed a sonogram on Marge, and moments after being born he set fire to Homer's tie.
He is considerably motivated in disrupting the routine at Springfield Elementary, and his pranks are often elaborately complex, while his actions and speech frequently show considerable mental agility, street-smarts, and understanding, so he cannot be called "stupid". Bart also shows amazing intelligence outside of his pranks. Outsmarting Sideshow Bob, figuring out how to save the snakes on Whacking Day, getting the lemon tree back in a Trojan Horse method, giving advanced knowledge about George Washington in the French and Indian war, and learning other languages are just a few examples. In "Separate Vocations" when Bart becomes hall monitor, his grades go up showing that he only struggles because he doesn't pay attention, not because he's dumb. This is reinforced in the episode "Brother's Little Helper", in which it is revealed that Bart suffers from Attention Deficit Disorder. He seems to have trouble understanding even the simplest concepts, such as the word "irony", what the equator is and that the logo on his globe ("Rand McNally") is not actually a country. The fact that he is the son of Homer Simpson and shares many of the same mannerisms and behaviors may account for his antics. Homer even described Bart as "a younger, more in-your-face version" of himself. It is often joked that Bart is a pawn of the devil due to his mischievous behavior, such as when Lisa calls him "the Devil's cabana boy", a role which Bart seems to relish in. In one Halloween episode, the Devil actually makes an appearance in of the form of Ned Flanders saying "Hey Bart." like they are old friends.
Lisa Marie Simpson is a character in the animated television series The Simpsons, voiced by Yeardley Smith; Lisa is the only character Smith voices on a regular basis. Matt Groening, the creator of the series, named her after his sister.
Lisa is an extremely intelligent girl, one of the brightest characters on the show, with an I.Q. of 160. She plays the baritone saxophone. Lisa is also a Buddhist and often serves as a mouthpiece for the show's writers, many of whom are postgraduates, to voice their knowledge of philosophy, science and history. Both Lisa and Bart ranked #11 in TV Guide's "Top 50 Greatest Cartoon Characters of All Time."
In various dreams and scenes from an uncertain and ever changing series of futures, Lisa has been shown having a relationship with many people. These include Milhouse, but his lack of social skills, and pretentious "stud" approach often drives her away before she can be even remotely swayed. She has shown signs of affection for him, and it was implied in a future timeline she eventually loses her virginity to him. She is also seen tending to a downed Milhouse prior to meeting her latest interest in The Simpsons Movie.
Ralph became infatuated with Lisa when she took pity on him during Valentine's Day and gave him a card as a way of cheering him up. Ralph made himself Lisa's official boyfriend and hounded her relentlessly until Lisa broke his heart live during an episode of Krusty The Klown. Ralph channeled the rejection into a virtuoso performance of George Washington's life story which moved Lisa's heart and showed there was more to the sociably impaired classmate. She apologized to Ralph and the two became loving friends.
Lisa also takes a strong liking to Nelson Muntz for his bad-boy attitude. She dated him in the episode "Lisa's Date with Density".
In "Trilogy of Error", Lisa encounters a boy from West Springfield Elementary School named Thelonious Monk who seemingly matches her intelligence and loneliness. They seem to be fond of each other due to spinning around in circles for hours but he has never been mentioned in any later episode, hinting that this relationship didn't lead anywhere.
As a teenager, she finally comes the closest she has to actually marrying someone, a fellow student called Hugh Parkfield, only to break it off when he begs her to never see her family again.
In The Simpsons Movie, Lisa meets a boy, an immigrant from Ireland named Colin, whom Lisa falls almost instantly due to their mutual interests of saving the environment and music. At the end of the movie, it seems they are still pursuing a relationship.
Her musical abilities are extensive: she sings with a powerful voice, and has been seen playing the acoustic six-string (in "Last Exit to Springfield"), electric bass guitar, accordion and piano proficiently. She also taught herself to play the oboe in one Simpsons Comic. But her great love is playing jazz on her baritone saxophone (which sometimes sounds like a tenor saxophone). Her musical inclinations were nurtured by her relationship with the late jazz musician Bleeding Gums Murphy.
In the episode Bart To The Future, Lisa Simpson is the first straight female President of the USA. Her secretary is Milhouse Van Houten and Kearney is her bodyguard.
In the episode Lisa's Wedding, Lisa attends an eastern university and, after quarrelling with Hugh Parkfield over a book in the library, the pair fall madly in love. Hugh invites Lisa to come back to England with him, where one night he proposes to her and she accepts. On the day of the wedding, Lisa calls off the wedding because he wants to prevent her from seeing her family.
In the episode Future-Drama, Lisa graduates two years early and is about to go to Yale on the Montgomery Burns Scholarship.

Margaret "Maggie" Simpson is a fictional character featured in the animated television series The Simpsons. She is the youngest of the five main family members, and is eternally a baby. She first appeared in the Tracey Ullman short "Good Night" and was quite prominent during the Ullman days, often being featured alongside Bart and Lisa. Maggie has since become the least seen of the five main Simpsons.
Like average babies, Maggie is impressionable and easily influenced by what she sees around her. She once hit Homer on the head with a mallet, shot a suction dart at his picture, and brandished a broken bottle in The Simpsons Movie, as well as a pencil in imitation of Itchy and Scratchy. Despite her age, Maggie is a formidable marksman, as seen in Who Shot Mr. Burns? and Papa's Got a Brand New Badge, where she is able to shoot a whole mob of gangsters with a rifle.
Maggie's is shown saving Homer's life on numerous occasions, and at the same time demonstrating inhuman strength for her age. As shown above, the gansters she shot were going to kill Homer. In one episode, Homer was drowning, and she swam to him and dragged him to shore. Dr. Hibert explained that when a child sees their parents in danger, they burst out in a short bout of super human strength. In The Simpsons Movie, while Homer was being held at gunpoint by Russ Cargill, she dropped a heavy rock on his head from atop a peak just a few feet above.
She is keenly aware of her surroundings, and can usually be seen imitating the flow of action around her. Like Bart, Lisa and Homer, she is not fond of spending time with her aunts Patty and Selma.
At age one, Maggie could spell EMCSQU (E=MC²) with her toy building blocks- as shown in the season one episode Bart The Genius- whereas Lisa at age three could merely spell "STAR" and "RATS" with hers. She's able to answer complicated questions putting cubes together (Smart and Smarter), and solve complex IQ problems. She is also showed spelling her name (Lisa vs. Malibu Stacy). She has also played Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker on her toy xylophone, and written her own name with an Etch A Sketch. In two respective episodes set at her aunts' house, she was able to change her diapers by herself. When prompted, she has been able to understand and identify an "Dodecahedron" and a credenza. Also, while in Lisa's room, she grabbed Lisa's saxophone and played a fast paced tune very well.
In the one instance that has shown Maggie as a teenager, Lisa's Wedding, she appears to be a typical rebellious teenager, being described by Dr Hibbert as "quite a hellion", and can be seen smirking after Homer has inadvertantedly set fire to the British flag and is trying to put the fire out with manure. Ironically, considering Maggie's inability to speak at present, Homer questions if Maggie will ever shut up, implying that Maggie is a very talkative young woman, although she never speaks during the episode as someone always interrupts as she is about to. She also wears her pacifier around her neck as a pendant.
